Who We Are

Welcome to St Mary’s Church, Rickinghall Inferior.

Nestled in the heart of the village beside the old coaching road, St Mary’s is a beautiful medieval church with a distinctive round tower that has served the communities of Rickinghall, Botesdale and Redgrave for centuries. One of Suffolk’s historic round tower churches, it remains a warm and welcoming place of worship today.

We are part of a lively parish that offers regular services, events and activities for all ages. Whether you’re joining us for Sunday worship, a special service, a quiet moment of reflection, or one of our community gatherings, you’ll find a friendly welcome here.

Everyone is invited — come as you are.

Please explore our website for more information about us, our history and even some specially selected songs of praise and services which can be found on our Media page.

    Our Services

    Services & Worship

St Mary’s is a lively Church of England parish church at the heart of the villages of Rickinghall, Botesdale and Redgrave. We offer a range of worship styles – from traditional to more informal – so there’s something for everyone.

    Regular services include:

    • Holy Communion – the central act of Anglican worship, usually celebrated using the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) on the first Sunday of the month at 8:45am, and on the third Sunday at 10:30am. We also hold a midweek Holy Communion service on the second Wednesday of the month at 10:30am.
    • Community Worship / Family Services – relaxed, all-age services with hymns, readings, prayers and a talk, often including Holy Communion.
    • Special services throughout the year for Christmas, Easter, Harvest, Remembrance and other festivals, as well as baptisms, weddings and funerals.

We also run a regular Open House on the first Tuesday of the month at 10am – a relaxed time for coffee, chat and quiet reflection.

Whether you prefer a quiet, traditional prayer-book service or something more informal and welcoming, you’ll find a friendly atmosphere at St Mary’s. All are welcome, whatever your age or background – come as you are.

Services are held not only at St Mary’s but also at our sister churches: All Saints, Redgrave and the Chapel of Ease in Botesdale. For the latest times and details, please check the current parish magazine, the noticeboard, or contact the Rector.

For the most up-to-date service times, special services (such as at Christmas and Easter), or details of united benefice services, please check our calendar or contact Revd Helen Grover.

We are delighted to celebrate baptisms, weddings, and other life events here at St Mary's.

    • For a baptism, please contact Revd Helen Grover to arrange a conversation and booking. We usually hold baptisms during or after a regular Sunday service so the whole church family can welcome the new Christian.
    • For a wedding, we recommend getting in touch as early as possible. You don’t need to be a regular churchgoer, but we do ask couples to have a genuine connection with the church or the parish. Revd Helen will be happy to talk through the details with you.

Please email or call the Rectory on 01379 830003 or use the contact form to start the process..

Absolutely – everyone is welcome! Whether you’re a regular, visiting the area, exploring faith for the first time, or just want a peaceful place to sit and reflect, you’ll be warmly received.

There’s no strict dress code – come as you are (smart casual is most common). Children and families are very welcome; we love the noise and energy they bring!

Services usually last around 45–60 minutes. You’ll be guided through everything, and no one will be put on the spot. After the service, many people stay for a chat and refreshments. If you have young children who might find it hard to sit still, that’s completely fine – we understand!

If you have any particular needs (accessibility, hearing loop, etc.) or questions before you visit, just get in touch.
